Businesses and passive income

A business earns income while you do other things, but it only produces as long as it has goods in stock. You can own your first business from rank Soldat (soldier).

How a business works

A business is a large, shared enterprise, and only a limited number of each type exists in the whole game. Buying one is expensive and needs rank Soldat, but you can invite other players to work for you. A business earns income only while it has goods in stock, so you restock it to keep it running. The owner keeps the profit of their own business, and employees can take shifts.

The kinds of business

One of each in every city: Laundromat, Bar, Nightclub, Pawn shop, Taxi company, Gym, Car workshop, Money laundering center.

Only in one city: Vika Lobbying Firm (Oslo), Bryggen Seamen’s Association (Bergen), Kista Server Hall (Stockholm), Container terminal (Gothenburg), Diamond cutting works (Copenhagen), Border freight forwarder (Helsinki), Smelter office (Reykjavík), Fish plant (Ålesund), Dried cod exporter (Ålesund), Shipyard (Ålesund), Cold storage (Ålesund).

Others: Reptile shop, Ammunition factory, Used car dealer.

Passive income

Passive income is money that ticks in while you do something else — the foundation of a solid economy in NORDKRIM. There are three main sources. BUSINESSES (Laundromat, Bar, Nightclub, Money laundering center, Ammunition factory, Used car dealer): large, shared enterprises that you buy, keep stocked and collect profit from — see the separate questions about Businesses and the Ammunition factory. PLANTATION: a property you buy once, which grows crop entirely by itself over time, and which you harvest and sell (invest in security so others do not raid it). PROPERTY & BUNKER: a home is first and foremost protection (go into hiding from attacks), but if you own a high enough property with a bunker you can let OTHER players hide with you for a fee you set yourself — a small income stream of its own for the best established. From Soldat you can own one business, from Capo two and from Boss three. Property and the bunker are always available whatever your rank, while the other income sources unlock as you climb.

Working in another player’s business

Yes. All businesses in the catalog on Businesses can be clicked, and there you see the type, city, level, owner, the whole staff and what a shift pays. If you do not own anything yourself and there is a vacancy, you can apply for a job from there — you also find all vacancies together under the “Jobs” tab on the Market. The owner gets the application as a message and answers Hire or Decline — you are told either way. As an employee you can take a shift at regular intervals and be paid each time. The shift is taken from the warehouse the owner has filled, so you work with their goods. A few businesses do not live off stock, but off shares — the Used car dealer takes a cut of car sales, the Shipyard of repairs and the Cold store warehouse rent. There the shift is working the business itself, and you are paid from what it has earned; if the pot is empty, the position is simply not advertised until there is something to share. How many jobs you can have at once follows your rank: from Lommetyv you can have one, from Håndhever two, and from Capo up to five. If you own your own business, you cannot be employed by others.

The ammunition factory

One of the most expensive businesses in the game (only the Used car dealer costs more) — and there is only one in all of NORDKRIM, run under the cover of the Kongsberg group. The owner of the Ammunition factory produces the Bullet supply everyone else buys in Weapon shop.

The plantation

The plantation must be bought before it grows. It costs 500,000 kr, can be bought from the rank Lommetyv, and lies in the city you are standing in when you buy it — the crop can only be loaded aboard there. You can move it from the Plantation page. Once the plantation is yours, you build it up with kroner (area, location, security and workers), and it grows crop entirely by itself over time. You HARVEST whenever you like — the crop then moves into a harvested store where it is safe from raids — and SELL the harvested crop when the price suits you. The store keeps each STRAIN separate: price and risk follow the strain that was actually grown. If you switch strain while something is growing, what stands is harvested as the strain it grew as. What already lies on the shelf keeps its value. The kroner from the sale go into an internal store that you withdraw to the bank. Larger area gives higher capacity, better location a higher sale price, and more workers faster growth. Once you have filled up with workers, you can make the same people better under “The crew”: Green fingers increases how many grams each worker yields, and Fine handling increases the price you get per gram. The crew gets a title according to how far you have come — Aunt Olga, Gardener and Green-fingers expert for green fingers; Former farmer and Big farmer for fine handling. You do not get more staff from this; the same ones get better. The plantation produces by itself around the clock, so a level here takes about a month to earn back. Other players can try to raid your GROWING crop and steal a part — invest in security to make it harder, and harvest often to secure the crop (a harvested store cannot be raided). You can also raid others yourself from the rank Lommetyv, but only plantations that have been bought can be raided; the first attempt against a given player is a warning if you fail, but if you fail again against the same player you end up in prison. From higher ranks you can also rebuild the FACILITY itself — from the backyard via a greenhouse (2,500 g, from rank 8) and a hidden greenhouse to a professional facility. A bigger facility raises the cap on how much can grow before you must harvest, but growth above the base level needs supplies (water, seed and soil) that you buy continuously, and a big facility attracts robbers — in return it unlocks more security levels, a tractor that gives a larger supply store, and you can treat the field with insecticide so a harvest is lost less often. You get a notification when the supply store is down to 25%, and one when it is empty. The rebuild is expensive and is meant as a late goal, not an early purchase.

The press

The Press is where players run their own newspapers — one of the most expensive businesses in the game. Write and publish issues at a price you decide, choose a print run of the size you want to bet on (paid for in advance), and sell them to other players.

Political contacts

From a higher rank you can bribe a network of officials — the police chief looks away from your plantation, the police officer loses the papers on wanted cars, the politician arranges milder sentences, the customs inspector stamps your smuggling load, the judge prices releases more cheaply, and the harbor master gives you the best outlet on sea voyages. A bribe buys a fixed period, not the contact: if the envelopes stop coming, the benefit disappears the same second. Levels and prices are on the page, and everything is a running cost — networks are expensive to maintain.
